Clarian (Clarian North) is a music producer and songwriter from Montreal. Clarian is the head sound engineer at Lost Star, a Montreal based electronic hardware studio where space and time tend to slip away during the recording and creative process.

Under the alias Maurice Benjamin, in 2008, Clarian released the full length LP “So It Goes” an introspective folk record with thematic nods to Kurt Vonnegut and John Brunner. The record was performed with a live band which included Ram Krishnan (drums, bass, vocals), Jessie Mackado (bass), and Laura Lee Officer (violin). Clarian spent the next few years performing in and around the Montreal indie folk circuit.

During that period, Clarian also moonlighted at Lost Star. These night sessions largely influenced the emergence of a signature style which first gathered attention when Seth Troxler introduced and signed Footprtinz, the synth pop duo project of Clarian and Adam Weitzman. “Utopia”, Footprtinz first release, as well as the second release off of Vsionquest, was followed by several more singles with remix support including Audion and Maceoplex’s remix of Uncertain Change, Jimmy Edgar’s remix of “Dangers Of The Mouth”, and Ivan Smagghe remix of “Favorite Game”. Footprintz released their debut LP “Escape Yourself” co-produced by Ewan Pearson which dropped on Visionquest in 2013.

Clarian also released that year his first solo production on Life and Death, “Shine (Light The Sun)”. After performing at a Culprit party, Clarian relocated to California where he spent the next 6 months working with Guy Gerber in Los Angeles. Collaborating with Gerber on his widely acclaimed Album for Fabric, they continued with collaborations on Gerber’s “Steady Ep”, and the single “Claire”, off of Clarian’s “Chemical Gardens” EP on Visionquest. Later on, Clarian released “Fear And Self Loathing”, on Rumors.

Based between Mexico and Berlin, by 2015 Clarian was performing globally while recording and experimenting with more progressive crossover EPs with such releases as “Road To Recovery” on Turbo Recordings, “Dystopia”, on Multi Culti and “Mission To Bars” on Kompakt. More recently, Clarian has produced and collaborated with such artists as Tiga, Felix Da Housecat, and Jamie Principle. Tiga’s single “Don’t Break My Heart”, coproduced and mixed by Clarian led to the future production and engineering work on Tiga’s LP, “No Fantasy Required”, including Tiga’s track, “Having So Much Fun” with additional input from Clarian and Matthew Dear.

In 2016, Clarian returned from an ambient field recording tour in South Africa to Montreal where he began working with Felix Da Housecat and Spaceman on Founders of Filth. Felix’s imprint founders of Filth was launched in 2017 with “FOF Present’s Vol 1”. the compilation included an Aphrohead and Clarian collaboration “Know Thyself”, as well as "It's Your World", a collaborative effort between Jamie Principle, Felix Da Housecat, and Clarian. As well, The follow up EP “Ankh” on Kompakt demonstrates how Clarian's sound has been warmly received on multiple platforms. In early 2018, Clarian will be releasing “Television Days” a lo-fi synth pop album conceptualized and recorded in Berlin out on Balance.
